Siciliadness in a shrimp

Get out of here! ‒ says Cosimino to the servant girl. Then he speaks to the fishmonger: ‒ Don’t listen to her! She must not buy these things! ‒ The Sgriscia puts her hands on her hips, angry, but Cosimino does not give her time to answer; he gives her a push and starts again: ‒ Get out of here! ‒ he repeats. The fishmonger defends the woman, who starts shouting. Meanwhile people from all over the market arrive to watch what is happening. Cosimino shouts, furiously: – No, no! No prawns! Don Ravanà cannot and must not eat prawns! You ‒ he says to Sgriscia ‒ you tempt him like the devil and ruin his stomach!

From tuna to tuna

Instead, Comrade Tino, sitting like a president on the steps of the church, spat out sentences: ‒ Listen to me; before the revolution it was quite a different thing. Now the fish are mischievous, I tell you that! ‒ No; anchovies feel the grecale wind twenty-four hours before they arrive, resumed Master ‘Ntoni; ‒ it has always been like that; the anchovy is a fish that has better judgment than tuna. Now beyond the Capo dei Mulini, they sweep them out of the sea all at once, with thick nets”.

BACK TO PIRANDELLO: FROM THE SHORT STORY “COMPETITION FOR REFERENDARY TO THE COUNCIL STATE”
Risotto and sardines

Lagumina lost his confidence, but not his appetite! He ate as if he had been fasting for days! He ate a big plate of risotto without realising it, while going on about the contest. While he was talking, he did not realise that he had cleared his plate and kept looking for more risotto with his fork. When he realised his plate was empty, he looked at the other diners, then looked at the waiter and said: ‒ I thought it was good, if I’m not mistaken. Shall we have an encore? Bring me another. Ah, the mountain air!..

The sensuality of sea urchins

[…] they are the most beautiful thing you have down there, those bloody cartilages, those simulacra of female organs, smelling of salt and seaweed. What typhus and typhus! They will be as dangerous as all the gifts of the sea that give death along with immortality. In Syracuse I perpetually requested them from Paolo Orsi. How tasty, how divine! The most beautiful memory of my last fifty years!..
